Hello fellow Hexers,

It’s that time again. Let’s have a look at the data for the month of December in Hex. Before we dive into the data, let’s look at the events that happened in December that could have an effect on general activity.

  • Singles Night, a new singleton format weekly tournament, made its debut
  • Choir of Lumos got banned from the Rock format in order to diversify the Rock meta

When a value has two percentage values next to it, the first represents the change of that value compared to the previous month, while the second represents the change of that value compared to the equivalent month of the previous set (August of 2017).

Limited play

In December, there were 6,106 (-30.5%/+61.0%) draft gauntlets, 9,862 (-32.1%/+79.0%) evo sealed gauntlets and 578 (-59.9%/+100.0%) sealed gauntlets completed.

Looking more closely into draft data, we find that 1,068 (-32.1%/+41.6%) draft pods fired in December and 6,106 (-30.5%/+61.0%) draft gauntlets runs were completed. On average, 5.8 (+2.7%/+14.1%) runs were completed per pod.

Part of that increased limited activity compared to the 2nd month of Frostheart is due to the launch dates of the sets. By early August, Frostheart had already been out for a whole month, while Dead of Winter had been out for only two weeks by December 1st. Despite that however, activity remained higher in the second half of December, when Dead of Winter was a month old, than it was in early August when Frostheart was a month old.

As for the Clash, an average of 84.8 (-22.2%/23.4%) players participated in December. The closer we got to the holiday season, the fewer players would participate. While the first 2 Clashes of the month had 118 and 103 players (on par with the average signups from previous months), the last 2 had 64 (December 17th) and 54 (December 24th) players.

Constructed play

In December, 48,070 (-19.8%/+107.9%) constructed ladder matches were played.

An average of 88.3 (+3.7%/+55.6%) players signed up for the Arcanum Vault scheduled tournaments, and 76.375 (+10.0%/+63.7%) players participated in the FiveShards Weekly tournaments.

The Hex Primal weekly tournaments had a turnout of 17.3 (-30.3%) players on average for the Immortal Weekly series, while an average of 72.1 (-42.1%) players participated in Fight Night, and Singles Night had 25.7 players on average.

Finally, the Bash had an average of 73.8 (+10.7%/-29.9%) players.

A total of 932 (-17.1%/+81.3%) distinct players have been spotted in scheduled tournaments over the month.

We can still feel the effect of the PS4 release in constructed play, with a lot more matches being played than 4 months ago. The Bash had a significant drop in participation in December, but that could presumably be explained by several players spending time with their families on the 23rd and 30th, which had a very poor showing.
